1. Tamil Language Promotion Board

It will function at CIIL and apart from coordinating the activities, meetings, etc., the Board will advise the Government of India on matters pertaining to the development of Tamil language. The composition of the Board is given elsewhere.

2. Centre of Excellence for Classical Tamil

  • The Centre will work towards linking Tamil with the scattered Dravidian languages and reconstruct their history.
  • The academic programmes would focus on the following aspects of the Tamil language:
    • Documentation of the ancient Tamil period
    • Creation of visual episodes in Classical Tamil 
    • Production of online courses in Classical Tamil
    • Studies in historical and comparative linguistics of Dravidian languages
  • The Centre would make efforts to study the proto-Dravidian art, architecture and archaeology.
  • The Centre will research into the linguistic and cultural ties the Dravidian languages had established with the other linguistic space.
  • The Centre will prepare a historical account of the development of classical phases of Tamil and other ancient Dravidian languages into modern Dravidian Languages.

3. Honours and Awards

  • Certificate of Honour to eight distinguished  scholars of Classical Tamil
  • 5 Awards for young Tamil scholars (Age 30-40 years)
  • 1 National Award and 2 International Awards

4. Fellowships

  • 10 Doctoral Fellowships (Rs.10,000 per month for two years)
  • 5 Post-Doctoral Fellowships (value as per the UGC norms)

Manpower Development

Since the number of experts in Classical Tamil is becoming lesser and lesser, the CIIL will attempt to train and create the required manpower to undertake the advanced study of Classical Tamil and other Dravidian languages. However, the primary aims and areas of operation of the Centre can include:

  • To focus on translation of Classical Tamil literature into other languages
  • To research into poetic theory, grammatical tradition, aesthetics and knowledge bases
  • To prepare teaching and documentation material in print, film and electronic media
  • To study India as a linguistic area
