Synchronic  And  Diachronic  Study of Tamil Dialects

About this project

The aim of this project is to bring out a dilect dictionary, dialect atlas and occupational vocabularies.

The project will include :

Preparation of a detailed account of the demography of the Tamil speaking population in the world as a whole

Study of the dialectal information available in ancient and medieval literary works, grammatical works, commentaries, inscriptions and manuscripts

Study of Tamil dialects of the Moghal and European periods through available revenue documents, dictionaries,nikhantus, biblical translations, modern fictions and folklore

Compilation of information available on modern dialects - occupational, social and regional variations

A field survey of modern dialects
